Day 104 - Close Call

The eventual departure time was just after 12 noon, so we took an early lunch and spent the entire transit time on the bridge. It was a lovely day, although a little hazy. There were a number of small fishing vessels in one section of the channel. From previous conversations I don't think they're actually supposed to spread their nets in the marked channels. Our ship kept blowing the horn, the pilot was constantly on the radio, and when we were almost upon them they finally started hauling up their nets and moving out of the way. We came pretty close to one of them. This of course made for a lovely picture for me. Passengers have quite different priorities than the crew. The moment we were past the fishing vessels, of course, they all rushed to come back into the channel.

We spent the rest of the afternoon in dense fog as we sail south towards Shanghai. Today was actually Easter Sunday as well as our steward's birthday. So there was wine with dinner from the captain, and beer and wine later in the crew mess in honour of Alberto's birthday. There was, of course, karaoke - Alberto is quite a good singer. One of the newer crewmembers, Michael, was convinced to bring in his guitar and he sang for a while as well. It was a great evening and it was after midnight before people started to drift away. We should be at the Shanghai anchorage tomorrow morning about 8 or 9am. We will drop anchor and wait for more information.
